The benefits of selecting learning methods to complement learning styles are noted. Given the present state of knowledge, however, a variety of methods within a learning strategy is advocated. The place of the tutorial method within such a strategy is then discussed and student participation highlighted as the key to assessing whether the main benefits to be derived from tutorials are being realised. Some examples of participation patterns are discussed and suggestions made for improving student participation.
