In the transition from the fifties to the sixties and within the adaptation of the Franco dictatorship from the autarky to mass consumption, important transformations in the realm of gender relations arose. Those changes also affected the way marriage was understood. In this essay I will analyse the film ‘The rights of women’ (Sáenz de Heredia, 1963), which focuses on the troubled marital relations of Maria Jose and Juan. It will allow me to study the frictions and resistances that occurred in the ways of understanding masculinity, femininity and conjugal relationship. I also aim to raise the possibility that the narrative of the ‘battle of the sexes’ could have been used to respond to a state of discontent that later on would be given a collective, political and feminist nature.
