    Este estudo sobre usos e funções de ‘praticamente’ baseia-se em dados contemporâneos do português brasileiro em uso, coletados em diversos sites da internet e no ‘Corpus do português’, e fundamenta-se nos pressupostos teóricos da Linguística Cognitiva, em especial, da teoria dos espaços mentais. Em análise quantitativa (em termos percentuais) e qualitativa dos dados, demonstra que ‘praticamente’: (i) constitui um recurso à disposição dos falantes, que tendem a utilizá-lo em situações em que expressam uma opinião; (ii) atribui algum grau de imprecisão aos significados e, assim sendo, afrouxa o comprometimento com o estatuto de verdade do que está sendo enunciado, atuando na preservação da face dos envolvidos no ato comunicativo; e (iii) tende a ocorrer estabelecendo relação entre entidades pertencentes a uma mesma categoria e inseridas em um mesmo “frame”.

    This study about uses and functions of ‘praticamente’ is based on contemporary data from Brazilian Portuguese in use, collected from various websites and ‘Corpus do português’. It is based on the theoretical assumptions of cognitive linguistics and, particularly, the theory of mental spaces. In quantitative (in percentage terms) and qualitative analysis of the data, it shows that ‘praticamente’: (i) is available resource to speakers, who tend using it in situations where they express an opinion; (ii) attributes some degree of inaccuracy to the meanings and, thus, loosens the commitment to the true status of what is being enunciated, acting to preserve the face of those involved in the communicative act; and (iii) tends to occur by establishing a relationship between entities that belong to the same category and that are inserted in the same frame.
