This paper reports experiences involving the production of didactic materials and research projects conducted in the Graduate Program in Music at the Federal University in Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil. The importance of collective production of didactic materials in this field is highlighted in associated with reflection and investigation on processes of production, circulation and appropriation. Theoretical assumptions and analysis by Chartier and Choppin on written culture contribute to reflections upon music teaching books as a cultural objective, as well as upon the role of books in the development of music education
