  • Resumen
    • In this paper some aspects of student learning are discussed as background for an approach to the building of computer‐based models of systems. It is argued that rather than running simulations on pre‐built models, students may build such models themselves; in so doing there is scope for ‘deep’ or ‘meaningful’ conceptual learning to take place. An example is then given of the application of this theory to a cooperative computer‐based model‐building exercise of host/parasite systems in zoology. Both student and staff evaluations of the exercise are reported as having been positive and enthusiastic. It is claimed that this example of moving from theory to practice in model building has wide application throughout the sciences, social sciences and humanities.
