Applications of hypermedia in alternative performance assessment in science education are explored in this paper. The ways in which modern cognitive theories of learning rationalize the use of hypermedia systems in performance assessment are addressed; selected prototype applications of hypermedia in performance assessment are surveyed; and advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Hypermedia appears to be a promising technology for developing alternative process‐oriented assessment systems in science education.
