    La historiografía en torno a la Guerra Civil española fue una de las pioneras en el uso de la istoria oral, así como en el retorno del individuo al centro del debate sobre los hechos históricos. Este artículo examina la participación de voluntarios judios de Palestina en la Guerra Civil española a través del análisis de la trayectoria de Pinchas Chefetz. Nacido en Jerusalén, Chefetz fue miembro activo del Partido Comunista de Palestina y se convirtió en uno de los doscientos jóvenes judíos que salieron de Palestina para unirse a las Brigadas Internacionales. La mayoría de estos voluntarios era judía y comunista aunque algunos eran sionistas y varios eran árabes. A pesar de sus convicciones ideológicas, la decisión de ir a España fue personal y no necesariamente dictada por su partido político. Chefetz resultó herido en el frente ibérico, fue evacuado para recibir tratamiento médico primero en París y luego en la URSS. Sus esfuerzos para regresar a Israel se encontraron con el rechazo soviético y Chefetz se suicidó. Su trayectoria arroja luz sobre las vidas y decisiones de otros voluntarios del PCP, así como sobre la negociación entre su componente identitario político-ideológico y el étnico-nacional.

    The Spanish Civil War historiography was among the pioneers of using oral history and bringIng the individual into center stage when discussing dramatic events. This article focuses on one individual, Pinchas Chefetz. Born in Jerusalem, he was an active member of the Palers Communist Party and became one of some 200 Jewish youngsters who left Palestine to join the International Brigades. They wanted to defend the Spanish Republic, which was facing a nationalies rebellion, supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Most of the Palestinian volunteers vre Jewish and Communist, although a few were Zionist and several were Arabs. Notwithstandina their political and ideological convictions, the decision to go to Spain was a personal one and not necessarily dictated by their political party. Chefetz was injured in the Iberian front, was evacu- ated for medical treatment first in Paris and then in the Soviet Union. His efforts to return to Jerusalem following the end of World Wat II and the establishment of the state of Israel met with Soviet refusal, and Chefetz committed suicide. His trajectory sheds light on the lives and decisions of other members of the Palestine Communist Party, as well as on the constant negotiation be- tween their political-ideological identity component and their ethnic-national one.
