    En este artículo se realiza una revisión de diferentes estudios sobre los espacios ultraterrenos que aparecen en los sermones misioneros novohispanos escritos en náhuatl durante el siglo XVI y XVII. A lo largo de los años, estos trabajos han establecido que los misioneros utilizaron dos conceptos en la lengua náhuatl, Mictlan e Ilhuicatl, como referentes para explicar el Infierno y Cielo cristiano respectivamente, asumiendo que ambas culturas proyectaban estos espacios de una manera vertical. Sin embargo, nuevos trabajos en el campo de los estudios de manuscritos y códices prehispánicos y coloniales señalan que las estructuras del espacio ultraterreno mexica presentaban organizaciones complejas alejadas de una simple organización vertical. En este sentido, la utilización de los términos Mictlan e Ilhuicatl para explicar el Infierno y Cielo en los sermones novohispanos en náhuatl presentaría un nuevo problema de análisis.

    In this article we analyze different studies on the space of the afterlife that appear in the missionary sermons written in Nahuatl during XVI and XVII centuries. Through the years, these studies have proposed that the missionaries used two concepts from Nahuatl, Mictlan and Ilhuicatl, as points of reference for translating the Christian spaces of Hell and Heaven respectively, assuming that both cultures conceived these spaces in a vertical structure. Nonetheless, new studies on Pre-Hispanic and Colonial codex and manuscripts have shown that the configuration of afterlife space of the Mexica could not be conceived simply as a vertical configuration. Thus, the use of the concepts Mictlan and Ilhuicatl in the missionary sermons arises more questions on the topic.
