    • Educational policies encourage the use of computers to search information. In this research, we concentrated on the selection of relevant book references and we particularly focused on the impact of three characteristics of the list of references on the judgment of relevance by 34 pupils in grade 5: the topic’s familiarity, the length of book reference list and the relevance of these book references. Results showed that three factors significantly influenced the number of relevant references selected and the time, which was necessary to perform this selection. Moreover, several interactions were found. We used a recent model of text comprehension and memorization to conceptualize the cognitive processes involved in this task of selection. Implications for education and for the conception of electronic tools are discussed.
