Durante su obra de madurez Blas de Otero desarrolló con enorme coherencia una poética no exenta de cambios. En algunas de sus piezas y en el conjunto de su obra poética asoma a menudo, sin embargo, la voluntad de borrar las huellas de una protohistoria de su poesía, compuesta fundamentalmente por su libro Cántico espiritual, de muy distinto signo. La revisión, cuando no el rechazo, de su pasado burgués, católico y bilbaíno constituye la raíz de una angustia personal oteriana y un cierto acicate para la escritura, concebida como proceso de autoconstrucción.
During his later years Blas de Otero accomplished with astonishing consistency a poetics which was not free of an internal evolution. In some of his pieces and within the whole of his works, however, it is easy to glimpse a will to delete the footprints of his own prehistory as a poet, which mainly comes down to his earliest book, Cántico spiritual: a completely different sort of poetry, written under a totally different spirit. Otero’s revision, sometimes rejection, of his bourgeois, catholic, provincial background constitutes the roots of a personal anguish and at the same time triggered his writing, conceived as a process of selfconstruction.
