In this interview, Rod Ellis discusses the contribution, past, present, and future, of SLA studies to ELT. He considers two primary issues: the conditions that facilitate and promote SLA in the classroom;and how teachers can create those conditions. In particular, he discusses the role of grammar in the English language classroom, describing his own recent studies, and suggestion a number of approcahes to the teaching of grammar which are compatible with current perspectives on SLA. He also discusses the ways in which studies of classroom interaction and research into learner differences provide insights for the classroom teacher.
