This paper carries out an exploratory survey of text-internal and text-external features in intellectual property arbitration using a selection of 20 domain name awards drawn from the database of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Requiring a qualitative approach, the paper attempts to provide preliminary insights on how text-internal and text-external features determine the discursive construction of domain name awards, particularly generic Top Level Domain awards (gTLDs). Special consideration will be drawn to they way in which generic integrity is socially built up by members of this highly-specialised professional community.
