    The article problematizes the epistemological conditions that pervade the history of the language education of the deaf people in the twentieth century. To do so, it undertakes an analysis of a set of documents maintained by the Historical Collection of the National Institute of Education of the Deaf - INES, between 1909 and 1989. Based on the perspective of the Social History of Language and poststructuralist authors, the analysis allows observing the construction of a national curriculum planned for the deaf education in the twentieth century; the formation of teachers who would work with these subjects; and the pedagogical practices performed for achieve the goal of providing deaf people with a single language. Thus, it is possible to show how the deaf education enabled the development of a clandestine bilingualism, which allowed the formation of a linguistic resistance and the possibility of constituting a contemporary form of being deaf.

    O artigo problematiza as condições epistemológicas que perpassam a história da educação linguística dos surdos no século XX. Para tanto, empreende-se uma análise em um conjunto de documentos mantidos pelo Acervo Histórico do Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos - INES, compreendidos entre 1909 e 1989. Fundamentada na perspectiva da História Social da Língua e de autores pós-estruturalistas, a análise permite observar a construção de um currículo nacional planejado para a educação de surdos do século XX, a formação de professores que atuariam com esses sujeitos e as práticas pedagógicas desempenhadas para alcançar o objetivo de munir surdos de uma única língua. Assim, é possível evidenciar como a educação de surdos possibilitou o desenvolvimento de um bilinguismo clandestino, que permitiu a formação de uma resistência linguística e a possibilidade de constituição de uma forma de ser surdo observável na atualidade.
