    La crisis de 1803-1805 en Madrid supuso un revés sin precedentes para las economías de los hogares trabajadores de la capital. Tras un ciclo de crisis sucesivas iniciado a finales del Setecientos, la población laboral madrileña vio reducida su capacidad de consumo a un nivel inferior al mínimo tolerable, como sucedió también con la masa de campesinos pauperizados que desbordó las calles de la Villa y Corte a partir de 1804. La insuficiencia de las medidas adoptadas por las autoridades ilustradas ante esta situación anunciaba el colapso del sistema asistencial y de control social de la capital.

    The crisis of 1803-1805 in Madrid was an unprecedented setback to the economies of the humble households of the city. After a cycle of successive crises initiated at the end of the previous century, the working population of Madrid saw its consumption capacity reduced to a minimum level, as also happened to the mass of impoverished peasants who overcrowded the streets of the city in 1804. The insufficiency of the measures adopted by the enlightened authorities during the crisis announced the collapse of the poor relief and social control system of the Spanish capital.
