Teresa Carreño, es reconocida principalmente por ser una de las pianistas más relevantes del panorama europeo y americano de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Fue laureada por ilustres pianistas como Liszt, Rubinstein y Paderewski, o por grandes políticos como Abraham Lincoln cuando era tan solo una niña. Por su parte Joan Manen, violinista y compositor catalán, recordado –entre otras cosas- por ser el único violinista de su época en ejecutar todas las obras de Paganini, tuvo una relación muy cercana con la pianista Teresa Carreño, llegando a convertirse en uno de sus protectores.
Gracias a unos documentos de Manen, adquiridos por la Sala Barbieri de la Biblioteca Nacional de España, se pudieron localizar una serie de cartas que permanecen inéditas enviadas por Teresa Carreño en distintas épocas, y que ha sido posible vincular con otras misivas que se encuentran en el Archivo Histórico de la pianista en la ciudad de Caracas. De esta manera, se ha podido arrojar una nueva luz sobre las estancias de Carreño en España y Portugal, lo cual ha sido sumamente relevante en muchos aspectos que han favorecido a la relectura de la biografía de esta artista.
Con vista al centenario de la muerte de esta insigne pianista, nos hemos dedicado a realizar una revisión de la biografía escrita por Marta Milinowski, donde a través del estudio de los documentos personales y profesionales, además de la prensa, se busca resaltar la figura de Teresa Carreño como artista y su trascendencia en la historia musical.
Teresa Carreño is know for being one of the most relevant pianists in the European and American scene in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. She was greatly honoured by illustrious characters such as Liszt, Rubinstein and Paderewsky. Even one of greatest politician in history, Abraham Lincoln, became his fan when she was only a child. Joan Manen, for his part, was a catalonian violinist and composer, remembered, among other things, for being the only one to play the whole works of Paganini in his time. He had a very close relationship with Teresa Carreño, who would later become one of their benefactors.
Due to some of the Manen’s documents acquired by the Babieri’s Room in the National Library of Spain was made possible to locate some unpublished correspondence that had been sent by Teresa Carreño at different times.
In fact, these letters could be linked with other documents which are in the historical register of the pianist in the city of Caracas. In this way, it had been possible to shed fresh light on the topic about the stanys of Carreño in Spain and Portugal. This has been extremely relevant in many aspects that have favored to the reinterpretations of the biography of the artist.
Now, on the occasion of the centennial of her dead, we have been reviewing the biography written by Marta Milinowski, who aims to emphasize the figure of Teresa Carreño like one of the biggest artists in the recent history through the study of her personal and professional documents, as well as the articles published in the press of that time.
