This article presents an alternative way of learning ar-chitecture and urbanism; It reflects a continuous search based on collaborative work, under a transdisciplinary methodology, and therefore, it is open and unfinished indefinitely, since it recognizes that the construction of knowledge occurs in direct relation with each one of the participants: students, professors and inhabitants who interact, necessarily, individually and collectively. It specifically exhibits an academic exercise conduc-ted in 2016 in three residential complexes in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, with the aim of laying the ba-ses to develop public space projects that highlight the human being, through the visibility of the different groups of people who perform various activities according to their age, gender, sociocultural and physical condition, as well as finding the patterns that trigger social inte-raction, departing from the assumption that security, in particular, and quality of life, in general, can be driven from social coexistence. It is our intention to make explicit the value of the diffe-rentiated participation of each one of the members, ac-cording to different backgrounds and specific interests; For teachers, it represented both the revaluation of co-llaborative teaching work —the contribution to personal and collective research—, as well as the awareness of the difficulties involved; For the students, it was an op-portunity to know the different ways of approaching the project, and an effort to co-create their own knowledge; And for the inhabitants of the three housing complexes, it represented the opportunity to stop and visualize some of the problems with their sites, and with that, to seek solutions within the solidarity with their neighbors. We are aware of the international trend to standardize the curricula of universities for the sake of transparency in the quality of teaching, but we also believe that there must be learning spaces where, together with the social groups, an ad hoc program for each circumstance can be produced. It is the challenge that future professionals will face, and their training must at least explore it.
