    Este año 2019 recordamos el centenario del nacimiento de James Lovelock. Su hipótesis o teoría de Gaia cumple además medio siglo, pues fue descrita por vez primera en 1969. Lovelock definió Gaia como “una entidad compleja que implica a la biosfera, atmósfera, océanos y tierra, constituyendo en su totalidad un sistema retroalimentado que busca un entorno físico y químico óptimo para la vida en el planeta”. En su momento, la hipótesis Gaia generó intensos debates en la comunidad científica y filosófica por sus implicaciones sociales e incluso metafísicas. Era una nueva frontera. Este artículo evalúa la Teoría de Gaia medio siglo más tarde.

    On 2019 we remember the centenary of the birth of James Lovelock. His Gaia hypothesis or theory also celebrates half a century, as it was first described in 1969. Lovelock defined Gaia as “a complex entity involving the biosphere, atmosphere, oceans and land, constituting in its entirety a feedback system that seeks an optimal physical and chemical environment for life on the planet”. At the time, the Gaia hypothesis generated intense debates in the scientific and philosophical community due to its social and even metaphysical implications. It was a new frontier. This article evaluates what remains of Gaia half a century later.
