    En un mundo como el nuestro, donde la especialización parece la norma irrevocable que ha de regir la actividad investigadora, la obra de Athanasius Kircher, SJ (1602-1680) subraya la importancia de la búsqueda de lo universal. Kircher merece que lo califiquemos como “el último de los sabios universales”. La obra Athanasius (2016) entona, inspirada en el sabio alemán, un canto al deseo humano de aprender y a la necesidad que tenemos de cuestionar constantemente las ideas asimiladas. Propone una búsqueda que haga justicia a la etimología de la palabra “escéptico”, término que no se refiere al descreído de todo, sino al que inicia una búsqueda incesante.

    In a world like ours, where specialization seems to be the irrevocable norm that must govern research activity, the work of Athanasius Kircher, SJ (1602- 1680) underlines the importance of the quest for the universal. Kircher deserves to be described as «the last of the universal sages». The essay Athanasius (2016) intones, inspired by the German sage, a song to the human desire to learn and the need we have to constantly question the inherited ideas. He proposes a search that does justice to the etymology of the word “skeptic”, a term that does not refer to the unbeliever of everything, but to the one that initiates an incessant search.
