The paper describes the present state of the Basque language within the educational field in Spanish State and French State. It remarks the legislative aspects, the number of speakers, the language geographical distribution and the population's linguistic attitudes with the aim of presenting a sociolinguistic view which can explain language improvements in education. The different models of bilingual education are carefully detailed, considering the linguistic composition of teachers and pupils, the teachers’ training, the distribution of subjects in the school programme and the geographical area where they take place. It concludes by describing the results and establishing a discussion about the future of bilingual education in the Basque Country.
