A social science approach to language planning is contrasted with a language management approach to language planning. The language management approach connects language planning to discourse and requires a separation of linguistic and non‐linguistic motivations for language planning actions. Language planning is the kind of language management that social and political scientists are the most interested in because it is typically motivated by non‐linguistic interests.
