The latest studies, conducted with samples of Spanish adolescents show that the school environment is now being affected not only by bullying but also by cyberbullying. In fact, today we have to talk not only about school coexistence but also about cyber-coexistence. Thus, rethinking the keys that have to be taken into account for the prevention of school violence and the improvement of the school environment is a basic requirement.

In this sense, this article synthesizes an investigation carried out with the objective of identifying the relationship between the involvement in bullying and cyberbullying (in the roles of victim, aggressor, victim/aggressor and bystander) with the elements that are being the pillar of the prevention to date, empathy and social competence, on the one hand; and, on the other, the new patterns provided by the use of ICT to interpersonal relationships, sexting.

The research has been conducted with a total of 7.197 primary and secondary. schools students. The results obtained show a significant relationship between the involvement in school bullying and cyberbullying and the constructs analyzed.

In general, in order to address bullying and cyberbullying, it is necessary to work on both the keys of the direct context, such as empathy and social competence, and the virtual context, such as sexting. However, it is necessary to address them in greater depth depending on the specific population with which they work, based on gender and educational stage. The data collected allow us to continue advancing in the knowledge of bullying and cyberbullying and provide a framework of strategic guidelines to effectively address those problems.
