    En el sudoeste de la provincia de Santa Cruz, en la Patagonia austral argentina, se ubican las instalaciones industriales de los Yacimientos Carboníferos Río Turbio, que comprenden la mina de carbón en la ciudad fronteriza de Río Turbio, una usina a carbón, una planta depuradora y el ramal ferroviario que la une con el puerto de Punta Loyola en cercanías de la capital provincial Río Gallegos.El antiguo Ramal Ferro Industrial de Río Turbio (RFIRT) con una extensión de 285 Km y su trocha de 750 mm tiene características únicas: por ser el de trocha angosta más austral del mundo que todavía sigue en funcionamiento y por las adaptaciones técnicas de avanzada implementadas en sus locomotoras usadas, las cuales están aún en estudio por los especialistas en la materia.Con los proyectos de utilización de las vías para la realización de un tren turístico y su posible extensión a la Republica de Chile, en otro proyecto complementario de un tren bioceánico binacional, se pone de relieve la importancia patrimonial de estas instalaciones industriales de características particulares enclavadas en el sur de la Patagonia Austral.
