In Moldavia and Walachia (the two states that have been united, since 1862, under the name of Romania), the litigations on the settlement of boundaries were decided by considering boundary marks shown by special witnesses (named "good and old people"). These good and old people remembered the boundaries of a certain land over decades because, in their childhood, they had been beaten at every boundary mark.
