    Al enfocar el tema de los rasgos específicos del nacionalismo en el área balcánica (fundamentalmente en la antigua Yugoslavia) se advierte que la región ha desempeñado un papel esencial en el surgimiento y perpetuación del nacionalismo.

    Al mismo tiempo, se puede observar que el nacionalismo ha ocupado, en esta zona de Europa, el lugar que le hubiera correspondido a la democracia. Al no haberse dado este último caso, es la conciencia nacional y "estatal" la que ha impuesto las reglas del juego, y en lugar de la justicia social y la igualdad humana aparece la conciencia falsa y la práctica formalizada de "las cuotas nacionales".

    When we consider the distinctive features of the nationalism in the Balkan area (mainly in the old Yugoslavia) we observe that religion has played an essential role in the emerging and perpetuation of nationalism.

    At the same time, we can also notice in this European area that nationalism took the place that would have corresponded to democracy. Given this situation, the national and "state" conscience laid the roles of the game, and instead of social justice and human equality, a false conscience and common practice of "national quotas" appeared.
