    Clarín pone de relieve en su obra crítica, periodística e incluso literaria el interés por la norma de corrección idiomática que se dio en España durante el último cuarto del siglo XIX. Su crítica, dirigida a amigos y enemigos, reviste para él gran importancia –porque es un purista– y se centra en manifestaciones verbales correspondientes a todos los planos tradicionales del análisis lingüístico. Una parte fundamental de su censura tiene como objeto la norma fijada por la Real Academia Española. El crítico, cuyos reparos a las obras académicas aún mantienen cierta vigencia, participó con varios trabajos en la polémica que siguió a la publicación de la 12.ª edición del DRAE.

    Clarín clearly showcases in his critical, journalistic and even literary work, his interest in the rule of idiomatic correction that occured in Spain during the last quarter of the 19 th century. His criticism, addressed to friends and enemies alike, has great meaning for him –because he’s a purist– and focuses on the verbal manifestations of all traditional aspects of linguistic analysis. A great amount of his censure is aimed at the standards fixed by the Real Academia Española. The critic, whose objections to many academic works still hold value, contributed to the controversy that followed the publication of the 12th edition of the DRAE.
