El principal objetivo del presente artículo es proponer un modelo de análisis traductológico del ensayo. Para ello, en primer lugar se destacan los rasgos que definen el ensayo en tanto que género diferenciado de los otros tres grandes géneros literarios (narrativa, teatro y poesía) y se revisan las principales contribuciones teóricas el estudio de su traducción.
Las cuestiones tratadas en la bibliografía se agrupan en cuatro bloques: el contenido, las voces que se oyen en el texto y su interacción, la linealidad del texto y la dimensión cultural. Estos cuatro bloques se corresponden, respectivame nte, con las tres funciones del lenguaje identificadas por la lingüística funcional - sistémica (ideacional, interpersonal y textual) y con el contexto de cultura. This article aims to put forward a translation - oriented model of analysis of the essay.
Firstly, the article highlights the defining features of the essay as a genre to be differentiated from the other three great literary genres – narrative, drama and poetry. Then an overview is provided of the main theoretical contributions to th e study of essay translation. The issues dealt with in the literature are grouped under four headings: subject matter, the voices heard in the text and their interaction, the text’s linearity and the cultural dimension. A correspondence is established betw een these four headings and the three language functions identified in systemic - functional linguistics (ideational, interpersonal and textual) and the context of culture, respectively. Finally, by way of illustration, the model of analysis is applied to Sa muel Johnson’s essay “Capital Punishment” and its Spanish translation
