  Linguistic historiography pays much attention to the emergence and development of universal grammar concepts. However, grammar is not the only field where we can see universalist approach in action: the idea that all languages have a certain range of functions, have examples of good and bad usage and undergo transformations in the course of time, markes a crucial point in the development of linguistic thought. Early Modern Times (XVI-XVII cc. in particular) were undoubtedly an important stage in this perspective, and Portuguese linguistic writings of the period show universalist attitude both to language structures ‒ at all levels ‒ and to patterns of language functioning in society and across time.

  Para a consolidação da linguística como ciência madura foi necessária, além da compreensão de fundamentos universais de todas as línguas, formação das ideias da gramática universal (esta temâtica tem atraído a atenção de historiógrafos), o entendimento do caráter universal de propriedades da língua. A análise dos monumentos filológicos portugueses dos sécs. XVI e XVII possibilita estudar o mecanismo da universalização dos conceitos de apologia da língua materna, de norma, história, linguodidática, elaborados primeiro com base de uma língua concreta e logo aplicados a outras línguas, à língua em geral, a LÍNGUA.
