    Este artículo tiene por objeto describir y reflexionar sobre el papel del Consejo para Acreditación de la Educación Superior A. C. (COPAES) como instancia capacitada y facultada para conferir reconocimiento formal a favor de organizaciones desde el año 2000, cuyo fin sea acreditar programas académicos de educación superior de instituciones públicas y particulares, nacionales y extranjeras, así como colaborar con las autoridades educativas competentes en el incremento sistemático de la calidad de la educación superior. Lo anterior, se contextualiza con una breve reseña respecto de los antecedentes de la evaluación y acreditación de las instituciones de educación superior en México. Se finaliza con el planteamiento de algunas reflexiones y retos de la COPAES.

    The article aims to describe and reflect on the role of the Council for Accreditation of Higher Education, AC (COPAES) as a competent and empowered body to confer formal recognition in favour of organizations since the year 2000, whose purpose is to accredit academic programs of education Superior of public and private institutions, national and foreign, as well as collaborate with the competent educational authorities in the systematic increase of the quality of the higher education. The above, is contextualized with a brief review regarding the bac2kground of the evaluation and accreditation of institutions of higher education in Mexico. It ends with the presentation of some reflections and challenges of COPAES.
