Este artículo revisa los fundamentospolíticos y filosóficos que atraviesana la mirada androcéntrica omnipresenteen los retratos de la elite venezolanadel siglo XIX, realizados por ArturoMichelena. Se analizan dos imágenespara develar los códigos simbólicosy pictóricos de la adjudicación del espacioprivado y doméstico a las mujeres. Sibien, los retratos han servido comoinstrumentos que comunican la imagenoficial de la clase dominante, tambiénfungieron como herramientas constructorasy reproductoras de una feminidad cónsonacon las prerrogativas patriarcales dela burguesía decimonónica.

This article reviews the political and philosophical foundations which go through the omnipresent androcentric look in the portraits of the Venezuelan elite in the nineteenth century, painted by Arturo Michelena. Two images are analyzed to reveal symbolic and pictorial codes of the allocation of private and domestic space to women. While portraits have served as instruments which communicate the official image of the ruling class, have also served as construction tools of a femininity, in accordance to patriarchal prerogatives of the bourgeoisie of the nineteenth century.
