This article reviews the political and philosophical foundations which go through the omnipresent androcentric look in the portraits of the Venezuelan elite in the nineteenth century, painted by Arturo Michelena. Two images are analyzed to reveal symbolic and pictorial codes of the allocation of private and domestic space to women.
