El artista ante la sociedad. Miguel de Unamuno y "El rey burgués" de Rubén Darío

    El artículo pretende acercarse a la reflexión unamuniana desde la perspectiva modernista planteada en el cuento “El rey burgués” de Rubén Darío. En primer lugar, de acuerdo con la lógica del cuento dariano, se esboza la compleja relación económica y afectiva que el artista mantiene con su público y con la institución literaria. Seguidamente, se muestra la vigencia de esta problemática en las letras peninsulares, recurriendo a un episodio de Antonio Azorín y recordando una polémica entre Valle-Inclán y Francisco Navarro Ledesma. A continuación, se analiza el posicionamiento unamuniano ante su público a través de sus ensayos, artículos y prólogos, revelando unas concomitancias llamativas entre la ideología modernista y la del autor de Niebla. De hecho, Unamuno se muestra consciente de la razón económica subyacente en la relación del artista con la sociedad. El artículo revela asimismo una actitud recelosa de Unamuno hacia las multitudes y la institución literaria, actitud que se considera como reverberación de la situación conflictiva del artista en la sociedad burguesa. En última instancia, este enfrentamiento con el medio aparece relacionado con la estética simbolista.

    The article is an attempt to approach Unamuno’s thinking from the modernist point of view presented in the short story “The Bourgeois King” by Rubén Darío. In the first place, it sketches, in accordance with the logic of Rubén Darío’s short story, the complex economic and emotional relationship that the artist has with his readers and the literary establishment.

    Secondly, it shows the validity of this problem in Spanish arts, quoting an episode form Antonio Azorín and outlining controversy between Valle-Inclán and Francisco Navarro Ledesma. What is more, the article gives an analysis of the positioning of Unamuno before his readers through his essays, articles and prefaces, revealing some striking parallels between the ideology of modernism and that of the author of Mist (Niebla). In fact, Unamuno appears to be conscious of the underlying economic aspect in the artist-reader relationship. The article also reveals a distrustful attitude of Unamuno towards masses and the literary establishment, a standpoint which is considered a reflection of the difficult situation of the artist in the bourgeois society. Finally, this confrontation with the environment seems to be connected with the symbolist aesthetics.
