    Tradicionalmente, el (re)descubrimiento del Greco se ha situado entre finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Sin embargo, el pintor candiota estuvo presente en la literatura artística desde su propio tiempo, y en este sentido, la Ilustración jugó un papel fundamental gracias al desarrollo de la historiografía artística. En este contexto, la obra de Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez constituyó un paso decisivo para el conocimiento y la valoración de la obra del Greco, gracias a su aportación bibliográfica y documental, de gran repercusión posterior. En este sentido, resulta esencial una aproximación a su contribución, teniendo en cuenta tanto sus fuentes como su valoración crítica del pintor griego. Para ello es necesaria la revisión de varias de sus obras impresas y manuscritas, así como el cotejo con otros trabajos anteriores y coetáneos como los de Antonio Palomino o Antonio Ponz

    Traditionally, the (re)discovering of El Greco has been placed between the ending of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th. However, the painter of Candia was mentioned at the artistic literature since his own time; in this sense the Enlightenment played a fundamental role, thanks to the developpement of the artistic literature. In this context, the work of Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez became a crucial step for the knowledge and the appreciation of the works of El Greco, thanks to his bibliographical and documentary contribution, which had a great futher impact. As a result, an approach to that contribution, taking into account his sources as well as his valutation of the Greek painter, is essential.

    To accomplish that it is necessary to review of several of Cean�s works, as well as the comparison with other previous and contemporary works, such as those of Antonio Palomino or Antonio Ponz
