    Este estudio examina la representación paradójica y problemática en torno a la figura del gitano en la película Gitano (2000) dirigida por Manuel Palacios. Por un lado, el filme invierte en algunos casos la asociación estereotípica del binomio gitano/delincuencia y payo/ley. Sin embargo, por otro lado, se sigue inscribiendo el cuerpo gitano dentro de los parámetros de otredad y se le confina al ámbito artístico del flamenco como parte de una etnicidad prototípica y comercial.

    Mediante un análisis detallado expongo cómo la composición cinematográfica inscribe la representación de esta figura étnica bajo un discurso pre codificado y reduccionista que refuerza la perspectiva negativa por parte la sociedad hegemó- nica española en relación a dicha figura.

    This study explores how Gitano (2000), directed by Manuel Palacios, portrays the gypsy figure in contradictory terms.

    On one hand Gitano reworks the notion of law and outlaw by inverting the stereotypical associations of the gypsy and payo society; but on the other hand, it continues to inscribe the gypsy body within the parameters of alterity and confines this entity to an artistic realm of flamenco as a prototype for commercial ethnicity. Through a careful analysis I expose how the filmic composition falls into pre-codified representations that continue to be reductionist, and, hence, reinforce the current adverse view in mainstream Spanish society around this ethnic figure.
