Resumen de Contactar, entreter, informar: um retrato da inclusão digital de jovens e seus familiares em Portugal

  In the scope of the project "Digital Inclusion and Participation: Comparing the trajectories of digital media use by majority and disadvantaged groups in Portugal and the USA (2009-2011” (UTAustin/CD/016/2008), in this article we seek to characterize the uses, by young people and their families in Portugal, of the media for contact, information and entertainment purposes, so as to understand the forms of inclusion through digital media by different populations beyond the access/non-access. Our theoretical background is offered by Livingstone and Helsper (2007) and Peter and Valkerburg (2006), and we then problematize the inequalities of access and use of digital media by children and their families, to debate the potentialities and limitations of communicative, leisure and informative uses for their inclusion in digital media and, through them, for the intergenerational integration. The analysis of the different types of uses among the sample allows us to demonstrate the differences in the use of the digital media, from which we derive conclusions, especially concerning the need for a media education as a way to ensure an effective inclusion.

  No âmbito do projecto “Inclusão e integração digital: Comparação de trajectórias de uso de meios digitais por diferentes grupos sociais em Portugal e nos Estados Unidos (2009-2011)” (UTAustin/CD/016/2008), procuramos neste artigo caracterizar os usos dos media para fins de contacto, de informação e de entretenimento de jovens e seus familiares em Portugal, de forma a compreender as formas de inclusão através dos media digitais por diferentes populações para além do acesso/não-acesso.

  Partindo do enquadramento teórico oferecido por Livingstone e Helsper (2007) e Peter e Valkenburg (2006), problematizamos as desigualdades no acesso e uso dos media digitais por crianças e jovens, e suas famílias, debatendo em seguida as potencialidades e limitações dos usos comunicacionais, recreativos e informativos para a inclusão de jovens e seus familiares nos media digitais e, através destes, para a integração inter-geracional. A análise dos diferentes tipos de uso entre a amostra permite-nos demonstrar as diferenças na utilização dos media digitais, das quais derivamos conclusões, sobretudo relativas à necessidade da educação para os media como forma de garantir inclusões efectivas.
