  • Resumen
    • The thermite reaction is often discussed in introductory chemistry class, but the importance of this process for welding massive industrial components is often overlooked. This article documents the application of thermite chemistry to weld train tracks as demonstrated for a high school chemistry class in India. The accompanying text and photographs show the entire process--which employed 13 kg (60 mol) of thermite mixture--from erecting a mold to igniting the charge, filling the mold with liquid iron, and trimming the rough casting.
