  El levantamiento popular del Dos de Mayo, en Madrid, y la represión subsiguiente, fueron el punto de ruptura de la alianza hispano-francesa establecida en el Tratado de Fontainebleau. La insurrección madrileña significó el paso decisivo de los incidentes aislados a la guerra contra Napoleón. La sangre derramada en aquellas jornadas y el hecho de que el escenario fuera la capital del Reino dio pie al mensaje llamando a la lucha para la salvación de la Patria. Todo el país respondería a la llamada. La Nación recogía el protagonismo que las viejas instituciones habían perdido.

  The popular revolt on May 2nd, in Madrid, and the subsequent repression, were the breaking point of the Hispanic-French alliance settled by the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
  
  The insurrection of Madrid meant the decisive step from the isolated incidents to the war against Napoleon. The blood spilled in those days and the fact that the scenario was the capital of the Kingdom gave cause for the message calling to the fight for the salvation of the Nation. The whole country would respond to the call. The Nation assumed the protagonism lost by the old institutions.
