Laura Barrajón Pérez, Cristina Sangrador Pelluz, Matilde Martínez García, Enrique Soler Company

  • Introduction: Ertapenem is an antibiotic with an ability of causing cross-sensitivity reactions in patients who are allergic to other beta-lactams; some of them life-threatening. The use of a Desensitization Protocol (DP) is an adequate tool for its administration in these cases, by tolerance induction.

Case report: Patient allergic to penicillin with an infected ulcer by two bacteria sensitive to ertapenem. A literature research was performed on ertapenem desensitization techniques, not obtaining information on this issue. It was decided to design an ertapenem DP in seven steps based on other beta-lactams desensitization.

The desensitization was carried out successfully without emergence of allergic reactions.

Observation: The use of this DP enabled a safe and effective therapy with the drug of choice
