All Positive Ions Give Acid Solutions in Water

  • The acidity of aqueous solutions of positive ions is never zero although many texts say incorrectly that most metals of Groups I and II and some others are not acidic. The few cases in which acidity may usually be regarded as negligible, but not zero, include the Group I metals other than lithium and quaternary ammonium ions and similar ions that cannot form a coordinate bond to a water molecule. The acid constants of metal ions are given in Table I one of the article.
