  • A simple, inexpensive laboratory experiment is reported which examines the molecular mass of polystyrene. A semi-quantitative relationship between Rf and average molecular mass is developed using polystyrene standards. This discovery-based experiment analyzes common polystyrene samples. The experiment is suitable for high school and introductory college Chemistry laboratories.
