A pedagogical experiment is described to examine the physical absorption of gases, in this case carbon dioxide, in a hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) where the absorption concentration profile can be followed by a color change. The HFMC is used to teach important concepts and can be used in interesting applications for students, such as carbon dioxide removal from gas streams. Students find the issue of carbon dioxide absorption interesting as a mean of reducing global warming. The color change helps the students understand the process, making the experiment appealing. With the described setup, students obtain the carbon dioxide flux as a function of liquid velocity inside the fibers. At low liquid velocities, the results agree with those predicted by a simple mathematical model, and at high liquid velocities, a deviation from the model is observed, as expected, for the concentration of carbon dioxide used in the gas stream. As an additional task, students use the collected data to estimate carbon dioxide solubility in water.
