The Philadelphia "Crucifixion", Dijon "Annunciation", and Washington "Apparition": a carved altarpieces's painted wings from the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden

    Recent study of two panels in Philadelphia generally attributed to Rogier van der Weyden , the "Crucifixión with the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist Mourning", indicated that the paintings, often considered an independent diptych, are actually a carved altarpiece's wing exteriors. This finding and the subsequent discovery that two paintings attributed to a follower of Rogier van der Weyden -the Dijon "Annunciation" and Washington "Christ Appearing to His Mother"- had originally been the interior faces of the Philadelphia wing panels affirm the existence and suggest the character of a lost altarpiece. Questions of the altarpiece's format, iconography and the paintings' authorship are considered.
