The author discusses the impact of literacy on position uncertainty. J. A. Dunabeitia et al., showed that illiterates demonstrated a total absence of transposed-character effects and were unable to determine individual characters fixed within strings. M. Perea et al., indicated that this lack of effects had nothing to do with literacy acquisition per se but rather with the acquisition of orthographic representations.
