A protocol for the preparation and disinfection of chayote buds and seed material with sodium hypochlorite was tested for in vitro culturing. We defined that a total active chlorine concentration of 1.2% provided complete sterilization of the explants in a few minutes, with high percentages of survival and regenerated plants after aseptic treatment of buds (ca. 73.7%) and seeds (ca. 90%). All buds and complete seed were regenerate defficiently in MS culture media with or without plant growth regulators after the disinfection treatment.
