Results of a study on the tensile properties of AISI SAE 5160H steel used in the manufacturing of semielliptical wharves are presented. Test results from specimens with and without heat treatment were compared for analysis on the improvement of mechanical properties. The characterization of steel was done via traction and hardness tests. The microstructure of the steel was analyzed to determine grain size and percentage of phases. It was concluded that the mechanical properties of the specimens tested showed a significant improvement, based on their grain size and change of metallographic structure, when undergoing heat treatment.
