In this paper, we examine the translation of determiners between Norwegian and French. As a starting point, some important groups of prototypical equivalents are established. The next step is a distinction between cases where these groups of equivalents apply and cases where other factors have to be taken into account. Finally, we propose a subdivision of nouns and their determiners into three types, depending on their status as an argument, a predicate, or part of a complex verbo-nominal predicate. It is shown that this subdivision, along with electronic dictionaries for each type, constitutes an essential basis for the automatic translation of determiners between two languages.
