At the beginning of the new millennium traditional dictionaries seem more and more inadequate for the increasing needs of their users and unable to keep up with the new opportunities offered by electronic technology. It therefore appears unavoidable to go beyond the conventional idea of the lexicographical entry by trying to pave the way for the creation, within the dictionary article itself, of a sort of word grammar which is meant to consider not only the isolated words, but also the connections existing between one word and the others. One of the possible and necessary responses is the extremely detailed and extensive description of verb and noun patterns combined with the use of collocations. This paper investigates the use of collocations, with particular regard to the benefits derived from their systematic introduction into a bilingual German-Italian/Italian-German dictionary.
