  • The article notes the history of user interface icons which help people operate technology as of May 2014. The @ or "at sign" is known to have been used in the sixth century and appeared on the American Underwood typewriter by 1885. The power button symbol was created by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The symbols for a keyboard's command shortcut, Bluetooth technology's short-distance wireless connection, the USB and Firewire computer buses, and the ethernet are noted.
