  • Resumen
    • The paper presents and evaluates the results of an etymological research aimed at uncovering the oldest layer of latinisms and romanisms in Slovene language, namely words borrowed before the beginning of the 12th century. The author points out a number of problems that appear in the collection and analysis of this type of borrowings, and recommends that great caution should be exercised when attempting to definitively conclude on the time of borrowing of the words and their original forms. The paper further presents the most important phonetic, morphological and semantic characteristics of the collected material. It is established that there are actually no exclusively Slovene ancient latinisms and romanisms: parallel borrowings can always be found at least in western Croatian dialects, if not across the entire South-Slavonic linguistic area, and even in other Slavonic languages. The research confirms that the borrowings were motivated by external, i.e. non-lexical factors.
