After the publication in 1938 of the already classic book by J. R. Spell, Rousseau in the Spanish World before 1833, it seemed that almost everything had been said on Rousseau's reception in Spain. Nevertheless, later contributions on the subject related to a specific author (Marchena, Aguirre, Meléndez Valdés, Montengón, etc.) or to the diffusion of French books and authors during the later quarter of the 18th century and the early 19th century (an issue mainly studied by L. Domergue and M. Defourneaux) make possible and necessary a new global revision of the subject, such as the one carried out by Bermúdez Cañete in 1989 or, more recently, by Lydia Vázquez and Juan Ibeas. Anyway, the topic has been studied more from the literary and political points of view than from the educational one.

Although this paper will mainly focus on the educational aspects, it will situate them in the wider context of a general diffusion and reception of Rousseau's works, life and image in Spain during the 18th and 19th centuries. An image that oscillates, at the beginning, between the "divine" Rousseau of the Girondist Marchena and Rousseau's reputation, according to the reactionary myth, as the leader, together with Voltaire, of a "sinister conspiracy" or a "fierce sect". As far as education and the 19th century are concerned, it will place Rousseau among the classical authors who help us to think about education but do not contribute to the educational practice or the shaping of the national educational systems, or, among the Institutionists, as one of the more remarkable fathers of modern education.
