Resumen de El baloncesto, 121 años después de su invención: entre el deporte y la americanización

  En este artículo se presenta una aproximación a la historia del baloncesto, deporte inventado por James Naismith en Springfield (Massachusetts) en el mes de diciembre de 1891, en el ambiente colegial del YMCA. De entre los deportes genuinamente americanos (béisbol, fútbol americano, hockey sobre hielo), el baloncesto es el que más adeptos ha conseguido en Europa, donde llegó con las tropas americanas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. De hecho, se pueden establecer puentes y relaciones entre el baloncesto y el modo de vida americano (American way of life) hasta el punto que este deporte –que refleja algunos de los aspectos de la mentalidad americana, como el puritanismo y el espíritu de frontera– ha constituido un importante factor de americanización, cuya influencia se ha dejado sentir también en España.

  This paper provides an overview of the history of basketball, a sport that was invented by James Naismith in Springfield (Massachusetts) in December 1891, within the collegiate environment of the YMCA. Among the genuinely American sports (baseball, American football, ice hockey), basketball is the sport that has achieved the greatest following in Europe, where it was brought by American troops during the First World War. In fact, it is possible to establish links and relations between basketball and the American way of life, to the point that this sport –which reflects certain aspects of the American mindset such as Puritanism and the pioneering spirit– has become a major contributor to Americanisation, and the scope of its influence has also reached Spain.
